Prediction of non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) and beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) in blood of dairy cows from values of selected biochemistry parameters on day one post partum.

  • Original language description

Five years ago in Czech Republic we introduced routine blood biochemistry analyses on day 1, 10 and 30 post partum (p.p.) in 15% of cows of the herd, performed as part of transition period management. In order to make blood chemistry examinations simplerand more efficient, a new approach was tested based on the estimation of NEFA and BHB values for the day 10 p.p. according to blood chemistry results on day 1, using special regression models. In 2007-2009, 823 dairy cows (parity 1 to 7) were examined in total. They were in 19 Holstein or Fleckvieh herds, in loose housing, fed TMR without anionic salts. Paired blood samples were taken from vena/arteria coccygea on day 1 (1) and days 9-12 (2) p.p. Serum levels of Ca, inorg. P, Mg, total bilirubin, NEFA,BHB and activity of aspartate aminotransferase were analysed. The data from pluriparous cows were used by step-wise regression for prediction of NEFA2 and BHB2. Models based on various combinations of blood chemistry parameters under stu
