Dental disease in chinchillas - diagnosis and treatment.
Original language description
Chinchillas are true herbivore mammal with complete elodont dentition. Dental disease is in pet chinchillas the most commonly encountered health disorder. Clinical signs of dental disease include anorexia, progressive weight loss, change of feeding habits and feed preferences, deterioration of fur quality and excessive salivation commonly resulting in fur chewing. Apical elongation of all teeth is commonly obvious and in contrast to other commonly kept small herbivorous mammals, apical elongation of thefirst two cheek teeth could be palpated cranially to the zygomatic arch, close to the as firm bony swellings. Cheek teeth osteoresorptive lesions are commonly seen. Chinchillas have a high incidence of gum erosions, gingivitis and gingival hyperplasia. This correlates with the presence of elongated clinical crowns and spur formation, particularly involving the maxillary cheek teeth. The main cause of partial or total obstruction of the lacrimal duct is bony remodelling around elongating
