Genetic diversity and host specifity of Theileria equi and Babesia caballi in rural areas of eastern Romania
Original language description
Piroplasmids are tick-transmitted intracellular prototoan parasites responsible for causing diseases livestock with an economic impact, mainly in tropics and subtropics. Theileria equi and Babesia caballi are species responsible for equine piroplasmosis.Recent Romanian research had focused on piroplasmids in domestic animals and stray dogs, however, no data is available regarding prevalence in semi-feral and feral horse population. This study aimed to investigate the infraspecific diversity of T. equi and B. caballi and provide san insight into host specifity of equine piroplasms and to trace their possible exchangebetween horses and dogsin shared habitats.
