African great apes are infected with several Plasmodium species, including the precursor of human parasite Plasmodium falciparum. However, the ecology of these pathogens in gorillas is not studied. This study designed to determine the prevalence, diversity and individual traits underlying the incidence of malaria infection in gorillas.
