Original language description
Eight Oesophagostomum species have been recovered from free ranging primates; three species have been demonstrated from humans and the following two in African great apes: Oesophagostomum stephanostomum and O. bifurcum. Massive infection of humans with O. bifurcum can be fatal due to multiple nodule formation in the colon (=nodular worms). Fatal cases have been described in sanctuaries while nodules found in wild chimpanzees do not seem to affect their health status.
