Hepatozoon spp. in Carnivores from Czech Republic with Focus on Canidae
Original language description
Apicomplexan protozoa of the genus Hepatozoon are common intracellular parasites of carnivores and are transmitted by ingestion of hematophagous arthropod definitive hosts. Recently the most discussed species in Europe is H. canis because of its importance in veterinary medicine. This parasite is frequently documented in dogs in the Mediterranean area where its only known vector tick Rhipicephalus sanguineus is present. In wild Canidae, Hepatozoon sp./H. canis seems to be common all over Europe. However, information about its taxonomy and transmission is still lacking. The aim of this study was to primary investigate the presence of Hepatozoon spp. in wild carnivores from the Czech Republic and to define those ectoparasites acting as potential vectors. We sampled and examined blood or tissue specimen of animals from the families Canidae (40, positive 24), Mustelidae (7, positive 2) and Procyonidae (16, positive 0). Furthermore phylogenetic analysis based on entire 18S rRNA genes includ
