THE VALUE OF ENDOSCOPY IN EMERGENCY AND CRITICAL CARE FOR LOGGERHEAD TURTLES
Original language description
Loggerhead turtles with traumatic injuries are frequently presented to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital. After the initial examination of the patients the critical care starts with oxygen and fl uid therapy, debridement of deep wounds and antibiotic treatment. In loggerhead turtles included into this study oesophagoscopy, gastroscopy and cloacoscopy were routinely performed for the control of presence and minimally invasive removal of the foreign bodies. Debilitated turtles in poor condition were restrained manually, active patients were sedated with tiletamine/zolazepam (3.5 mg/kg, intra-muscularly). Endoscopy was performed on turtles kept on heated pad in ventral recumbency, with the rigid telescope (10 mm diameter, 0o, 30 cm length) and fl exible endoscope (13 mm diameter, 160 cm length). For cloacoscopy lidocaine (3 ml 2% lidocaine/1l sterile saline, 30oC) was administered through the working sheet/channel for distension of the cloaca and urinary bladder and for colon irrigation. R
