Parasites of western lowland gorillas and chimpanzees in Loango National Park, Gabon with focus on Schistosoma mansoni

  • Original language description

Fecal samples of western lowland gorillas and central chimpanzees from Loango National Park, Gabon were examined by coproscopic methods. We detected eggs of gastrointestinal nematodes, Mammomonogamus loxodontis, Strongyloides fuelleborni, spirurid nematodes, Capillaria sp., paramphistomatid trematodes, Probstmayria sp., acantocephalans, cysts of Entamoeba spp., Blastocystis sp., Endolimax sp. and trophozoites of entodiniomorphid ciliates. We isolated DNA from S. mansoni eggs and subsequently analyzed internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox 1) fragments using maximum likelihood phylogenetic analyses and haplotype network respectively and showed the position of our samples from gorillas and chimpanzees within the S. mansoni clade. This is the first record of any schistosome species in gorilla and first confirmed record of S. mansoni in Gabon which urges surveillance in the area and prompts questions regarding the extent of zoonotic transmission and the clinical impact.
