Mycoparasitism of Pythium oligandrum observated against Microsporum canis in agar media and on hairs - in vitro observations
Original language description
Dermatophytosis is common zoonosis, infections of the skin in animals and humans. In cattle, horses or cats can the treatment quite challenging. Our in vitro observations were conducted with use of the collection strain cultures of Microsporum canis, M. gypseum and Trichophyton mentagrophytes and a fur sample obtained from a healthy, dermatophytose-free cat. The fur samples were incubated with the cultures for 10 days. Afterwards, the fur sample was placed in a mineral oil droplet on a slide, the oil suspension of Pythium oligandrum (PO) was added. The reaction was observed under the microscope and photographed. In addition to this, we have also observed reaction between preparations of PO (oil and water suspensions, called Dermasin and Ecosin, respectively)in therapeutic concentration and the bulk of the grown fungi cultures at the Petri dishes. The microphotographic documentation of our experiments is presented. In order to visualize the processes more clearly, the classical microphotography is supplemented with scanning electron microscopic images and with videos. Results - After several hours, the hyphae started to dissapear. In all cases, after several days the hyphae started to reoccur. This suggests that repeated application of PO is necessary in order to eliminate the dermatophytosis. With the control sample, treated the same way, but without addition of PO, no changes of hyphae were observed. Even in the environment extremely loaded with the fungi on Petri dishes, the PO visibly consummed large amount of their hyphae within hours. Again, it was possible to observe the reoccurence of the dermatophyte collonies after several days. Coclusions -This in vitro observations visualize in detail the mycoparasitism of PO. Our results show that it could be useful in the treatment of dermatophytosis.
