Amphibian diversity of Dzanga-Sangha, Central African Republic
Original language description
We report on amphibians of rainforests and bais (i.e. open swampy areas surrounded by forests) in the Dzanga-Sangha Forest Reserve and adjacent forest-savanna mosaic on the north-western margin of the Congo Basin, Central African Republic. The diversity was evaluated by a combination of conventional morphological taxonomy and DNA barcoding. By comparing our data with those of neighbouring regions (SE Cameroon, N Republic of the Congo), we assess presumed proportion of recorded species, composition of the amphibian fauna, its biogeographic affinities and habitat preferences. Preliminary results imply that habitat disturbances imposed by abundant mammalian megafauna are among important factors maintaining high amphibian diversity in the study area. Obviously, the Dzanga-Sangha region, with its well preserved habitats and ecological interactions, has enormous conservation significance not only for its popular megafauna but also for the relatively overlooked lower vertebrates.
