    Soft tissue surgery.

  • Original language description

The review of most common soft tissue surgery procedures in reptiles is presented. Different options for surgical management of abscesses in reptiles exist. One option is to lance the abscess, remove the caseous material inside, and leave the wound open to heal by second intention. Another option is to remove both the inner caseous material and the entire fibrous capsule as well. The resulting wound can be left open (to heal by second intention and should be cleaned daily and topical antibacterial creams applied if needed) or sutured closed. When antibiotics are administered, they are chosen based on culture and sensitivity results. Radiosurgery is useful in reptile patients for skin incision, body wall incision, organ biopsies, and a variety of other procedures. Bipolar forceps allow fine coagulation of vessels. Skin closure is best accomplished with an everting suture pattern such as horizontal or vertical mattress. Synthetic absorbable suture materials are absorbed slowly. Most reptiles do not traumatise surgical incisions. Wound healing is slow in reptiles and suture removal is generally scheduled 4 to 6 weeks after surgery. Many wounds will heal by second intention with appropriate topical wound care and antibiotic use. However, some are large enough that repair is needed. The standard protocol for coeliotomy in lizards and snakes, as the classical approach to ovariectomy, salpingectomy, salpingotomy, gastrotomy and gastrectomy, enterotomy and cystotomy, is described.
