Duplication and hypoplasia of obturator foramina in a dog

  • Original language description

A 2-year-old female entire boxer was presented for screening of hip dysplasia. The dog appeared healthy on physical exam and did not have any previous medical history. Hip-extended radio-graphs revealed abnormal morphology of both obturator foram-ina (Fig 1A). A single, small obturator foramen and duplication of the small obturator foramen asymmetric in size were detected on the right and left side, respectively. Spondylosis of lumbosa-cral part of the vertebral column was also identified. Subsequent native CT (LightSpeed 16, GE medical system) imaging of the pelvis confirmed these findings (Fig 1B). Although duplication of the obturator foramen on the right side was identified on 3D volume rendering, the transversal section of the CT scan showed a thin bone membrane covering the right caudal obturator fora-men in the bone window. The linear soft tissue density sur-rounded with fat tissue could represent nerves and vessels passing through both cranial obturator foramina. The aetiology of this morphologic anomaly remains unknown but congenital anomaly is presumed. A review of literature databases (PubMed, Scopus and ScienceDirect) did not show previous reports of bilateral hypoplasia and unilateral duplication of obturator foramina in dogs. A single case of ossification of obturator foramen and a case of triplicate obturator foramen were described in humans. Hypo-plastic obturator foramen could potentially lead to compression or impingement of the obturator nerve, artery and vein; however, this dog did not show any clinical signs and was reported to be clinically normal 1 year after initial presentation.
