Comparison of sensitivity of tests in ecological assessment of sediment extracts from small waterways in suburban landscape (Brno, Czech Republic).

  • Original language description

Apart from nutrients, trace elements and organic compounds river sediments may also be polluted with harmful substances. These pollutants may be easily transformed, enter the aquatic food chain and lead to negative effects on organisms, particularly fishand humans consuming them. Our study presents the results of bioassays performed to evaluate ecotoxicity of sediment samples taken from two small watercourses Leskava and Troubsky Brook affected by diffuse (farming) and point pollution (sewage) in the Brno city suburban area (South Moravia, Czech Republic). Ecotoxicity was determined using ecotoxicological tests performed on green algae (Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata), aquatic vascular plant duckweed (Lemna minor), water fleas (Daphnia magna), frog embryos (Xenopus laevis) and luminiscent bacteria (Vibrio fischeri). Furthermore, potential toxicity of the sediments was assessed on the basis of inhibitory effects produced on the growth of Sinapis alba roots. The samples of sediments we
