The role of house fly (Musca domestica) in dissemination of antibiotic resistant Escherichia coli
Original language description
The aim of the study was to examine the presence of antibiotic-resistant Escherichia coli isolated from flies at chosen breedings and to determine the fly-role in dissemination of antibiotic-resistant strains in this environment. We hypothesized the presence of antibiotic-resistant E. coli in flies due to their close contact with animal feces and their role in capturing and transporting of bacteria. Indeed, a high prevalence of antibiotic-resistant E. coli isolates was found in fly isolates on dairy farm (89 %, n = 147), pig farm (82 %, n = 216) and horse diseases clinic (96 %, n = 155), presumably absorbed through the intestinal tract or through external contact. Flies were represented mainly by house fly, whose larvae and imagoes developed and come into intensive contact with older animal manure. Considering that part of antibiotic compounds delivered to animals on the farms is not absorbed and is excreted through feces, it might further select for antibiotic-resistant strains. We fo
