Original language description
We collected ectoparasites from wild-living birds in Costa Rica in 2004, 2009 and 2010. A total of 1878 individuals of 217 species of birds were examined. A total of 537 individuals of 48 bird species belonging to the families Cardinalidae (38 birds of 5species), Emberizidae (232 birds of 17 species), Fringillidae (55 birds of 6 species) and Thraupidae (207 birds of 19 species) were examined. A total of 453 birds (84 %) of 37 species were parasitised with chewing lice. Chewing lice belonging to 6 genera were found.
