Determination of methylmercury and total mercury in water ecosystem
Original language description
Objective of this study was to evaluate the aquatic environment for the presence of methylmercury. Methylmercury and total mercury was determined in water, sediment, algae, and in the muscle and skin of fish species Leuciscus cephalus. Methylmercury is considered to be the most toxic form of mercury, there is methylation of inorganic forms of mercury by certain bacteria living in sediments. Methylmercury enters aquatic organisms from water and accumulate in the food chain. After extraction of the tissues methylmercury was determined by gas chromatography with electron capture detector (GC/mýECD). Methylmercury was extracted from the water using SPME and determined by gas chromatography with mass spectrometry detector (GC/MS). Total mercury was determined on the AMA 254. The resulting values were calculated to be a bioconcentration factor.
