Can ticks parasitizing on reptiles play a role in natural cycle of SFG rickettsiae?
Original language description
Altogether 466 Ixodes ricinus ticks (428 nymphs and 38 larvae) collected from 74 males of Lacerta schreiberi lizards were examined by PCR method for the presence of Rickettsia spp. Rickettsial DNA was detected using primers set RpCS.877p and RpCS.1258n among 47% of nymphs and 31.6% of larvae which were subsequently subjected to specific PCR to spotted fever group rickettsiae (SFG) detection. The results revealed that 41.4% of nymphs and 7.9% of larvae displayed presence of SFG rickettsial DNA. Selectedpositive samples (n=31) were sequenced and compared with sequences available in the GenBank database. Most of the samples (n=29) were similar to R. monacensis and 2 samples were resembled with 99% similarity to R. helvetica.
