Original language description
Representatives of the genus Haemogregarina Danilewsky, 1885 are reptilian and fish blood parasites, transmitted by invertebrate definitive hosts, which are often not known. In our study we examined 21 freshwater turtles belonging to 5 species (2 Cuora galbinifrons, 13 Malayemys subtrijuga, 2 Platysternon megacephalum, 1 Sacalia quadriocellata, and 3 Leucocephalon yuwonoi) imported from China, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam. The presence of haemogregarines was confirmed for 1 S. quadriocellata, 1 P. megacephalum, and 4 individuals of M. subtrijuga by the microscopic examination of blood smears and PCR method. The results of phylogenetic analyses of 18S rDNA sequences of our isolates demonstrated that identical parasite species infects 2 different intermediate hosts M. subtrijuga and P. megacephalum.
