Genotypes of Toxoplasma gondii isolated from Pallas's cats with fatal toxoplasmosis

  • Original language description

Pallas's cats (Otocologus manul) are small cats sensitive to Toxoplasma gondii infection. The cases of fatal toxoplasmosis were recorded in Pallas's cats kept in different zoos. In the Czech Republic, there were also similar cases, however still not published. The aim of this study was to characterise genotypes of T. gondii isolated from Pallas's cats with acute toxoplasmosis. In total, 12 Pallas's cats died during the years 2004 to 2013 in four zoos in the Czech Republic. Toxoplasmosis was proved in 8of 12 (66.6 %) Pallas's cats. The prominent pathological and histological lesions were pulmonal oedema, necrosis and interstitial bronchopneumonia with mononuclear infiltrations, enlarged and discoloured liver with focal necrosis of hepatocytes and nonsupurative infiltrations and enlarged spleen. Tachyzoites and tissue cysts of T. gondii were seen in lung, spleen, liver, brain, cerebellum and heart. T. gondii antibodies were detected in eight Pallas's cats post mortem. Successful genotyp
