Original language description
Our environment is confronted with growing number of xenobiotics. These bioactive compounds can reach the aquatic environment in many ways and have considerable effects on aquatic biota. The fish acute toxicity test in a mandatory step in chemicals toxicity testing. However, its ecotoxicological relevance is questionable. Moreover, fish are subjected to considerable pain and suffering. In accordance with reduction, refinement and replacement philosophy, fish embryos are considered as replacement or refinement method since these developmental stages are not legislatively protected (Directive 2010/63/EU) and are likely to experience less pain or suffering. The aim of this review was to summarize available data on fish embryo toxicity tests and introducetheir possible perspectives in modern toxicology. Based on the conducted studies, the fish embryo toxicity test is a reasonable alternative to fish acute toxicity test. Its range of possible application is impressive with many future pers
