Effects of pesticides on carp
Original language description
Over the past century and up to the present time humans have introduced a large number of chemical substances into the environment. Fish are sentinels of their aquatic environment as they are in constant contact and hence have a biochemical exchange to the medium they live in. Thus fish are usually used in environmental risk assessments in order to elucidate the biochemical fate and potential hazard of environmental contaminants. One of the most prominent and most widely used fishes are common carp. Carp have been used as model species in aquatic toxicology for many years and the knowledge on effects of widely distributed pesticides is summarized in this Chapter. The chapter is focused on the effects of pesticides on carp, ethiology, mechanism of toxicaction, toxicity, clinical symptoms, and pathological and morphological picture of the fish exposed to various chemical groups of pesticides is rewieved.
