Original language description
Proliferative kidney disease (PKD) is an endoparasitic disease of salmonids caused by the myxozoan parasite Tetracapsuloides bryosalmonae (Myxozoa: Malacosporea). We have recently described the typical pathological and histological changes for PKD. Haematologically we found decreased numbers of red and white blood cells, low haematocrit values and low concentrations of haemoglobin in diseased fish. The complement value and mainly oxidative burst of phagocytes were significantly elevated. But fish examined one month later showed better health status and the haematological parameters tended to normal values.
