    Candidatus Neoehrlichia mikurensis in Ixodes ricinus ticks in the Czech Republic

  • Original language description

    Candidatus Neoehrlichia mikurensis (CNM) is an emerging bacterium transmitted by Ixodes ricinus in Europe. CNM can infect several animals, including humans. Little is known about its life cycle, distribution or structure. In this study, the distribution of CNM in the Czech ticks and the ultrastructure of the bacteria within the vector tissues was investigated. To shed further light on the distribution of CNM in the Czech Republic, over 13 600 Ixodes ricinus ticks collected in the surroundings of the major Czech cities were subjected to the conventional PCR analysis. In summary, we detected CNM in the majority of the screened areas in close proximity to the major cities in the Czech Republic.
