Isolation and phylogenetic analysis of canine distemper virus from wild animals in the Czech Republic

  • Original language description

Canine distemper is one of the fatal diseases of carnivores. Thanks to vaccination, it doesn't almost occur in domestic animals in the Czech Republic. The aim of my work was to collect samples from wild animals in the Czech Republic, to detect canine distemper virus (CDV) in samples and sequencing the hemagglutinin (H) gene to find out which genotype of CDV is circulating among the wild animal populations in our country. Between 2014 and 2018, we collected 138 samples, mostly from foxes (Vulpes vulpes) and martens (Martes martes, Martes foina). Real-time RT-PCR was used for testing and 50(32%) samples proved to be positive for CDV. Phylogenetic analysis showed that Czech CDV strains belong to the European lineage and are highly identical to wildlife viruses from Germany and Hungary (98.86% to 99.65% identity). This is the first phylogenetic analysis of CDV isolated from wild animals from the Czech Republic.
