The rehabilitation, release and tracking of a Red Kite (Milvus milvus) intoxicated in 2017

  • Original language description

This case study describes the account of a rescued Red Kite (Milvus milvus) admitted to the Wildlife Rescue Center at the Budapest Zoo and Botanical Garden with suspected carbofuran intoxication. The patient required emergency care (including immediate administration of atropine) upon arrival to the facility, however, it responded well to treatment and recovered rapidly. The patient was released with a satellite tracker near Lake Neusiedl on the 6th of October 2017 following successful rehabilitation. Once back in its natural environment, the Red Kite described in this report elicited behaviour consistent with the normal patterns observed for this species. In this brief report, we would like to emphasize not only the importance of emergency veterinary care in the case of carbofuran intoxication, but also just how crucial the role of satellite trackers are in birds of prey to gain information on the movements of these individuals and the success of rehabilitation, but also in the localization of specimens that fall victim to organophosphate poisoning or other forms of bird crime.
