Effect of gabapentin on the feeding behaviour of common carp (Cyprinus carpio)
Original language description
The overuse of pharmaceuticals is becoming an increasing threat to the environment. Drug residues can also negatively affect aquatic organisms, which represent a crucial part of natural ecosystems. New-generation antiepileptic drugs are one of the groups of drugs whose adverse effect on the environment is often discussed. Gabapentin, which is primarily intended for the treatment of epilepsy and neuropathic pain, is also used to treat bipolar disorder or as a prophylaxis for migraines or restless legs syndrome. This medicine is also widely used in veterinary medicine for its calming effect on animals. After ingestion, gabapentin is partially excreted from the body in an unmetabolized form and passes into wastewater and from there into surface water. The concentration of this substance increases in the aquatic environment and its chronic exposure can have a negative effect on the behaviour of aquatic organisms. During the four-week experiment, we observed weekly the time it took the carp to complete their feeding ration. The results were noted and followingly evaluated using Unistat for Excel 6.5. It was found that gabapentin has an effect on feeding behaviour in common carp (Cyprinus carpio).
