Comparison of selected hematological and blood chemistry parameters in four species of bats at the end of hibernation

  • Original language description

Insectivorous bats are a group of mammals characterized by their unique physiology. In addition to active flight, these small insectivores have a specific ability to survive the winter, when food is not available, in a state of hibernation. Hibernation is a physiological state; however, it has a significant effect on vital functions and also on some blood parameters. Information regarding blood parameters in insectivorous bats is very limited, and there is also a lack of comparison of the range of these values in different species of bats. Therefore, we decided to compare selected blood parameters in four species of insectivorous bats (Myotis myotis, Myotis blythii, Nyctalus noctula and Rhinolophus ferrumequinum). A total of 83 individuals were included in the study. Values were compared between males and females and between individual species. More pronounced differences were found between species, while there was no difference between males and females for most parameters.
