Calming signals and changes in surface temperature in therapy dogs
Original language description
This study aimed to evaluate stress-related behavioral indicators and changes in surface temperature in therapy dogs during their work sessions. Using infrared thermography, the inner canthus temperature of 12 certified Golden Retrievers was recorded in one-minute intervals, while behavior was simultaneously analyzed through video recordings. The most frequently observed behaviors were licking and the so-called "whale eye." Both the dogs’ surface temperature and the frequency of stress-related behaviors significantly increased with the duration of the therapy session, with a noticeable threshold around 20–25 minutes. These findings suggest that session length can critically influence animal welfare and should be carefully considered when planning therapy sessions
