Plasmid-mediated colistin resistance gene mcr-5 in E. coli isolates from broiler chicken farms in Paraguay
Original language description
Colistin is one of the last-resort antimicrobials against multi-drug resistant Gram-negative bacteria causing infections in humans. Recently, plasmid-mediated resistance to colistin has been discovered and mcr genes encoding this resistance have been detected globally in Enterobacteriaceae isolates from farm animals, food and human clinical samples. Several plasmid families were found to facilitate the spread of this novel resistance mechanism. We aim to evaluate the prevalence and characteristics of E. coli isolates with plasmid-mediated resistance to colistin from broiler chicken in Paraguay and to type plasmids carrying mcr genes.
