The seed production of wild grass species for restoring botanical diversity of grassland
Original language description
At the Grassland Research Station in Zubří the suitability of ten wild grass species (Anthoxanthum odoratum, Arrhenatherum elatius, Briza media, Bromopsis erecta, Cynosurus cristatus, Festuca rupicola,Holcus lanatus, Koeleria pyramidata, Poa angustifoliaand Trisetum flavescens) was tested for commercial seed production. The seed yield in the two harvest year (1995-96), the thousand-seed weight and germination are described. The trial showed that some wild grasses could be cultivated successfully by using common seed growing technology. The seed productivity of the species with large seeds was very high, especially in the first harvest year (e.g. the ecotype of Bromopsis erecta showed a yield of more than 900 kg/ha). The grass species with small seeds yielded 150-800 kg/ha. In the second harvest year the seed productivity for most of the grass species decreased considerably.
