The Olympic Relay - the Past and the Present

The torch relay is based on an idea by Dr Carl Diem. A lit torch was carried from Olympia to the site of the Games through seven countries - Greece, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Austria and Germany: a total journey of more than 3,000 km. This first relay was the only one that has ever run through territory of Czechoslovakia or Czech rep. And the politics of Germany in 1930´ caused the relay was not accepted well all around, mainly in Czechoslovakia. During Twentieth Century the relay became symbol of the Olympic Games. A preparation of track, design of torch and expenses were ascribed with bigger importance. The last Olympic relay in 2008 reached even summit of Mont Everest. But this relay met also negative acts and attacks because China politics. Next year London will host the summer Olympic Games and the Olympic relay will be arranged from 19 May to the 27 July 2012 (70 days). The first time the Olympic torch relay will run in only one country.
