This study is an interdisciplinary reflection on the human ability and fundamental need to form and compose a symbolic world through means of architecture and urbanisation. This formulation is based on a "matrix" of human experience with the natural environment, yet it also goes beyond our purely natural existence to encompass our cultural milieu. In this way, the book identifies the universal characteristics of the specific human way of inhabiting the world, which reflects an internal logic manifestedin seemingly disparate, and at first sight, perhaps even incomprehensible forms. The relationships between such structures and the symbolic semantic and orientational resources are emphasised. The text illustrates the seemingly obvious assumptions of oureveryday domestic life with references to specific examples of the interrelated phenomena of identity, life style, spatial organization and architecture.
