Church, Society and Change: Christianity Impaired By Conflicting Elites
Original language description
The monograph deals with the ability of specific religious community to react adequately to social, political, economic and cultural changes. It investigates capacity to adapt using the example of the different types of reaction shown by the Catholic Church to the fundamental new challenges of the 16th century. The way in which the Christian elites of the different confessions coped with the primary problem of a divided Christendom is interpreted as a moment of rupture in the history of the Western church, which undermined its adaptive and innovative capacities and so set European society on the path to modern secularisation.
