Quest as a metaphor of human life is the main motif in the works of two writers of fantasy, and close personal friends: J. R. R. Tolkien and C. S. Lewis. The most impressive images of quest in their works are, though, represented by different genres: high fantasy in Tolkien and allegorical writing reflecting Bunyan in C. S. Lewis. This article tries to examine how these specific genres are the strong points of each of the two writers, as well as to draw attention to some parallel motifs and images in Tolkien?s fantasy stories and C. S. Lewis? The Pilgrim?s Regress. Keywords that have been found relevant for quest adventures within the two compared works include the terms desire, journey, landscape, personalities the quester is confronted with, and return. These aspects of quest are examined with regard to different concepts in the works of both writers.
