    Solar Vehicles: Theory and Practice

  • Original language description

One of the most important renewable sources of energy is photovoltaics which is based on a direct conversion of sunlight radiation to electricity. The operation of photovoltaic (PV) panels is clean and silent and does not produce any pollutants. Thanks to fast development of modern technologies (electronics, high-capacity batteries, semiconductors, modern construction materials, but also effective control systems etc.), this technological direction seems to be promising for the future. Although commercial solar vehicles are not affordable for wide public in these days, many teams worldwide construct cars powered - or co-powered - by PV panels. It is a topic attractive for students as well as science-technical workers, as evidenced by a number of both national and international competitions in constructing solar vehicles. This chapter deals with basic principles of PV cells and PV vehicles, which is followed by an overview of renowned international competitions in solar cars development and racing. Finally, a proposal for the inclusion of solar vehicles development in high school education is given. We consider such activities especially important, because they arouse young peoples’ interest in science and technology and show them an interesting career path which they can take in future.
