BDSM Communities in Central Europe: Societal Perspectives and Current Issues in the Digital Era
Original language description
The book BDSM Communities in Central Europe—Societal Perspectives andCurrent Issues in the Digital Era was written in response to the current situation ofthe BDSM scene in Central Europe. BDSM communities in many Central Europeancountries developed with a considerable delay compared to Western and Northerncountries due to the communist dictatorship that lasted until the end of the 1990s.There are no comprehensive studies that monitor the BDSM scene in CentralEurope, and this book subsequently aims to present at least some of the research, theoretical background and media coverage that would provide the readers with amore comprehensive view of the BDSM scene, its development, current shape andposition within the society, especially in the countries of the Visegrád Group. Theopening chapters provide a basic discussion of consensual sadomasochism, fetishism and BDSM in the context of the studied countries. The main contribution of thebook resides in the chapters dealing with the themes of detabooization, popularization, medialization, commodifcation and globalization of the BDSM phenomenonin the current digital age. The exploration of the topic is complemented by smallerprobes and research conducted in a selected Central European country, which combine the experiences of real actors from the BDSM community and the sphere ofpaid services with the attitudes and opinions of the general public. These sectionsthus include intriguing excerpts from interviews as well as representative quantitative data. The structure of the book is aimed at the university and academic spheres, whileits three opening chapters, which are not primarily devoted to research and statistical analysis, will also be of interest to the members of the general public curiousabout the topic, especially in its shape in the countries where it was not properlymapped yet.
