The Bible scholar Vincent Zapletal (1867–1938) and his reflections on the social, political and economic challenges of the first half of the twentieth century
Original language description
The significant personalities of the Dominican Order at the turn of the twentieth cen-tury include the Bible scholar and Orientalist of Moravian origin Vincent Zapletal (1867– 1938), who spent his entire academic life at the university of Fribourg in Switzerland. As a professor of exegesis of the Old Testament and later also of Semitic languages and literature, rector of the university, multiple times dean of the faculty of theology and author of numerous scientific and popularisation works, he played an important role in restoring Catholic biblical studies in the last decade of Leo XIII’s pon-tificate (1878 – 1903) and in the subsequent modernist crisis, which froze the field in the Catholic Church for forty years, and in which precisely the faculty of theology in Fribourg played a significant role.²In our contribution we will focus on his political and social views, which he did not express primarily in public, as his academic work was aimed specifically at restoring Catholic biblical science, but in a collection of short notes mostly in the Czech language, found in his personal papers preserv
