Original language description
Universities have to cope with the need for lifelong learning and with modern learning technologies, which touch the very substance of the university - knowledge development and transfer. In this situation very significant role should play knowledge management techniques. As modern universities are very much also business organisations with a lot of business activities on the "educational market", any method of increasing their competitive advantage might be very useful and interesting for them. Knowledge management seems to be one of recent leading approaches in this direction, capable also to improve significantly the attractiveness of universities. The aim of the paper is to analyse the nature of universities as knowledge organizations. It is focused on those possible steps in further university development that could stress their knowledge nature using a clear convergence between eLearning and knowledge management, and their merging.
