Shopping on the Internet and use of the technology

  • Original language description

Since 1993, modern technologies have been growing in the Czech Republic like there are in many other European Union countries. This article aims to analyse the current technological readiness of the Czech Republic and compare its current position with other EU countries. The reasons for the growth of spending on ICT investments consist in the expansion of modern technologies, the requirements for speed of information as well as the execution of operations, whether it be internet banking or on-line shopping addressed by this article. The ICT boom has brought about not only an increase in overall efficiency and productivity growth, but is also contributing to GDP growth. Using official data obtained from the Czech Statistical Office and statistical methods, the article evaluates the use of modern technology for on-line shopping with regard to gender, age group, educational level attained, the economic activity level and other factors of on-line shopping in comparison with selected EU countries. The article confirms one hypothesis concerning usage of shopping via the Internet. It was also determined that young people (aged 16 – 24 years) have made purchases over the Internet more than the population older than 55 years. Conversely, it cannot be confirmed that on-line buying and selling has grown over the past 6 years and that men purchase significantly more than women over the Internet. The results are important for the future direction of on-line shopping not only in the Czech Republic, but also in other countries.
