Evaluation of Bit String Fast Reroute Mechanism

  • Original language description

One of the leading security aspects of a computer network is reliability. However, in a modern Internet Protocol (IP) network, when line or node failure occurs, the process of network convergence begins. As a result, users may experience data loss, service unavailability, and other negative impacts during this process. The paper describes an evaluation of the modern Fast ReRoute (FRR) mechanism Bit-Repair (B-REP) that uses the Bit-String field to define hop-by-hop an alternative backup FRR path. The mechanism provides advanced protection against multiple outages of lines or nodes in the network domain. Implementation of the mechanism into the discrete event simulation environment OMNeT++ and its evaluation are presented in the paper. Finally, the proposed mechanism was tested in various simulation scenarios with multiple network topologies. © 2022 IEEE.
