Indigenous Knowledge as an Important Contribution to the Sustainability of Geotourism and Geoparks

  • Original language description

As an important part of the intangible heritage of the humankind, indigenous knowledge still seems to have an enormous potential for tourism sustainability. This fact is increasingly recognized both by scientific community and at a substantially slower pace by managers working in tourism sphere. The related studies are focused mostly on the tourism impacts on the indigenous identity or dedicated to the indigenous tourism development as a useful tool for poverty alleviation. This chapter illustrates the potential of indigenous knowledge for geotourism sustainability in two UNESCO Global Geoparks in Latin America: the Colca y Volcanes de Andagua Geopark (Peru) and Rio Coco Geopark (Nicaragua). This comparative study is based on the results of the qualitative research using the ground theory method. The qualitative data were collected through the semi-structured interviewing of the representatives of local households, focal groups discussions, problem tree analysis, photo-documentation and participatory observation. It describes not only less or more conserved indigenous knowledge related to the traditional use of rocks, clay, plants and other parts of the nature, but also the spiritual dimension of this traditional knowledge consisting in the specific kind of cosmology with its core concept of Mother Earth. The basic implications for the geopark management subjects consist from the identified opportunities set for their future sustainable development of geotourism.
