Rebellion in Chiapas: Challenge to Mexican Democracy

  • Original language description

The aim of the article is to provide insight into the way the conflict in the Mexican state of Chiapas was resolved. The conflict set in after the insurrection of the armed group Ejército Zapatista de Liberación Nacional (EZLN) in 1994. There were factors such as geographic isolation, poverty, violence, political consciousness and the availability of arms that set the foundation for the establishment of the EZLN. Particular attention is paid to the peace process, which was started by the PRI (Partido Revolucionario Institucional) and continued after the transition to democracy in 2000 during the reign of the PAN (Partido Acción Nacional). The negotiated peace agreements, which took account of various collective rights of native groups and thus formed the framework for changes in the Mexican constitution, may be considered crucial. Despite several peace talks the Chiapas conflict remains unresolved and it proves that the consolidation process of Mexican democracy has not been anchored.
