Argentinian Elections 2013: The Impact of Obligatory Primaries on the Final Result
Original language description
Argentina established obligatory primary elections with compulsory voting to make its system of candidate selection more democratic. This reform was approved by the two most important political actors in the country - peronists and radicals. Both big political parties were supporting the reform in order to be able to maintain cohesive candidate lists for the general elections. This article explores electoral data from legislative elections in 2011 and 2013, and uses them to test what effect divisive intra-party elections had on the final electoral gain of each political parties. Firstly, it uses a quantitative analysis to verify, if divisive intra-party elections had negative effect on the electoral gain in the general elections. Secondly, it focuses on the effect provincial governors had on the intra-party division.
