Togo: Legislative Elections of July 2013
Original language description
This is a note on legislative elections in Togo which were held, after several postponements, in July 2013. The note reviews the topic under the following headings: background, electoral system, recent developments, contenders, campaigning, results, aftermath, and outlook. The newly founded UNIR party of President Gnassingbé won 68% of MP seats. All suggests that the paramount influence of the Olympio family on Togolese politics has ended. The note confirms that Togo's electoral system is biased againstopposition southern constituencies. Overall, Togolese politics are both ethno-regionally and geographically structured.
