Quantification of the orientation and alignment of aplastic components of a ceramic body as a method for distinguishing among various means of using a rotational device in pottery forming

  • Original language description

Identification of particular pottery-forming techniques utilising rotational movement based on the products of the manufacture is a complicated issue encountering problems associated with random observability and ambiguity of the diagnostic features. This article describes the results of the application of a recently developed technique of quantitative analysis of the orientation of inclusions and voids in thin sections on an experimental collection of pottery formed with different contributions of rotational movement. Apart from comparison among the forming techniques, the article also evaluates the effects of degree of transformation of clay mass, shape of the vessel, velocity of rotation, as well as individual experience of the potter on the orientation of particles in a wheel-thrown vessel wall. The lower parts of vessels are crucial for the analysis. The clay mass in the lower parts undergo significantly greater deformation specific for wheel throwing causing better development of the characteristic orientation patterns. Typical orientation parameters are defined for differentiation of wheel throwing from other types of utilisation of rotational devices. However, the parameters are not independent of the context of the production. They reflect the equilibrium established between the potter's motor skills, the technical parameters of the rotational device, the clay properties and the shape of the vessel.
