Inferentialist-Expressivism for Explanatory Vocabulary
Original language description
This essay provides an inferential-expressivist account of inference to the best explanation (IBE). In contrast to the detailed analyses of deductive and semantic vocabulary, inferential-expressivist accounts of inductive vocabulary have been only discussed in programmatic terms. Explanatory vocabulary—not just “explains” and its cognates, but the rich, concrete, material language with which we account for why things happen—is an important part of inductive vocabulary. In this essay, we show how “best explains” can be treated as a logical operator. By showing how “A best explains why B” is related to the underlying, scientific inference “A, so B,” we can purchase the inference ticket of IBE for no more than the cost of science’s material inferences.
