War as a Decisive Factor in State Formation: War and peace in Africa - Local Conflict and the Weak State

  • Original language description

Most writers would draw a sharp dividing line between so-called primitive warfare (note this term “warfare” that as if suggests something milder than outright war) and war as such. One of the aims of this paper is to show that war existed in all societies, was closely linked to the question of sovereignty and was always contextual as to the number of participants, technologies used and purposes to be achieved. At a certain level of development war had consequences leading to political centralisation and formation of chiefdoms and states.
