Language, Class and Racial Mobility in South Africa
Original language description
This chapter approaches mobility as a conceptual metaphor and represents an initial attempt to explore how language and class practices effect and are affected by ideas about race and “racial mobility” in South Africa. I aim to demonstrate how ideologies about language, class and race are intertwined in South African social reality and how their entanglement has a fundamental influence on identity politics in the country. Advancing our understanding for the social injustices linked to language and race dynamics in Africa means to move beyond an analysis that merely identifies where language, class and race dynamics interact. I argue that we need to also start questioning why speaking in a certain way might be perceived as “white” or “black” and what the implications are for South African society more broadly.
