Begging for "Authenticity" Language Class and Race Politics in South Africa
Original language description
This paper argues that a Southernizing strategy is productive in understanding the relationship between language and identity in South Africa. Parliamentary discourse, an interesting mixture of political, cultural and colloquial dialogue, is the primary source of data, with a keen focus on ways in which authenticity is coded, negotiated and contested. The choice to examine exchanges between black members of parliament illustrates that identity politics carry an ambiguous and sometimes contradictory burden of colonialism.
