Southernizing the Study of English as a Lingua Franca

  • Original language description

The chapter discusses a geo-political and paradigm shift necessary in the study of English as a Lingua Franca (ELF). By focusing on the African continent scholars of ELF will be able to discover the limits of theorising in the field as it currently stands. Rudwick challenges concepts of ELF research from the global North by highlighting how they do not transfer and apply to the identity politics of language in in the global South, hence the necessity to 'southernize' the field. Ultimately, it offers a lens through which global scholarship on English as a lingua franca can be decolonized in terms of disciplinary limitations, geopolitical orientations, and a focus on the politics of race that characterize the use of English as a lingua franca all over the world.
